Express Entry step by step: from profile to permanent residence
The full Express Entry process, from checking eligibility and creating your profile to receiving an invitation and applying.
- Check which program you qualify for, then create an Express Entry profile.
- Your CRS score determines whether you are invited in a draw.
- If invited, you have 60 days to submit a complete application.
- Keep your profile current while you wait — changes can affect your score.
Check your eligibility
Confirm you meet the minimum requirements of the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Canadian Experience Class or Federal Skilled Trades Program. You will usually need a language test and, for foreign education, an Educational Credential Assessment.
Eligibility is separate from ranking: meeting the minimum lets you enter the pool, but your CRS score decides whether you are invited.
Create your profile
Create an online Express Entry profile with your age, education, language results and work history. You receive a CRS score and enter the pool of candidates.
There is no fee to create a profile. Only pay if you later submit an application after being invited.
Wait for a draw
IRCC holds regular draws with a cut-off score. If your CRS is at or above the cut-off, you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
While you wait, improve your score if you can — a higher language score or a provincial nomination can move you above the cut-off.
Receive an Invitation to Apply
Once invited, you normally have 60 days to submit a complete application. Missing the deadline means the invitation expires.
Gather your documents early so you are ready to apply quickly after an invitation.
Submit your application
You submit forms, supporting documents, pay the fees, and complete medical and police checks. IRCC then processes the application, usually targeting around six months.
After approval, you receive confirmation of permanent residence and can complete your landing in Canada.
