Adding dependants to an existing application
What changes when a child is born or a family member is added mid-process, and which forms need to be updated.
- Tell the visa office as soon as your family composition changes.
- A new child usually needs a birth certificate, passport, photograph and medical exam.
- Do not wait for the next request letter to update your application.
- Adding a dependant can change processing time and settlement fund requirements.
When to update your application
You must keep your application accurate and up to date. If you marry, enter a common-law relationship, have a child or adopt a child while the application is pending, notify the visa office promptly.
Use the web form or the contact method specified for your application. Include your application number, the change, and clear supporting documents. Keep a copy of everything you send.
Documents for a new dependant
Requirements vary by program and age, but a new child will usually need a birth certificate, passport or travel document, photographs, an updated family information form and a medical exam.
If the child is not travelling with you, you may still need to declare them as a family member. An undeclared family member can make a later sponsorship application very difficult.
Effect on funds and timing
A larger family can increase the settlement funds required for some programs. Processing may also take longer while the new documents are reviewed and the child completes medical checks.
Check the current fee schedule and fund thresholds after the change. Do not assume that an earlier assessment still applies.
