How to increase your CRS score
The changes that move your Express Entry score the most, ranked by impact, and which ones are worth the time and money.
- Improving your language test score is usually the fastest way to gain points.
- A provincial nomination adds 600 points and effectively guarantees an invitation.
- French ability is worth extra points and is under-used by many candidates.
- One extra year of skilled work experience adds points, but the gains taper off.
Which factors move the score the most
The Comprehensive Ranking System is weighted toward language ability and skilled work experience, with smaller contributions from education and age. Because the grid is known, you can usually predict exactly what a change will be worth before you spend money on it.
The highest-return changes are, in order: improving your language score, adding French, adding Canadian work experience, and securing a provincial nomination.
Improve your language score
Language is worth the most because it feeds into several separate categories. Reaching Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 9 or higher unlocks the maximum points, so a single half-band improvement on a retake can translate into many extra points.
For English, the accepted tests are IELTS General Training and CELPIP. Focus on the weakest of the four abilities — they all need to reach the target CLB to unlock the top tier.
Learn or prove French
French ability earns extra points on top of English, up to 50 additional points for strong French with strong English, and a lower bonus for French alone. It is one of the most under-used levers in the system.
TEF Canada and TCF Canada are the accepted French tests. Even an intermediate French level can add points that move you above a typical draw cut-off.
Get an ECA for your education
If you studied outside Canada, an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) from an approved organisation converts your credential into the Canadian equivalent so you can claim education points.
Claiming a two-or-more-credentials combination, or adding a second completed credential, can add points without any work experience change.
Add Canadian work experience
Skilled Canadian work experience earns more points per year than foreign experience and qualifies you for the Canadian Experience Class. One year of Canadian experience is often the single biggest non-nomination boost.
Experience is counted in one-year increments, so plan around full years to avoid partial-year gaps.
Secure a provincial nomination
A nomination through an Express Entry-aligned provincial stream adds 600 points, which normally places you far above any general draw cut-off. Provincial programs have their own eligibility rules and may target specific occupations.
If your base score is low, a nomination is the most reliable route to an invitation, but it requires meeting a province's criteria and applying separately.
Other boosts and what you cannot change
A valid arranged job offer and having a sibling in Canada can add points in specific categories. Age cannot be changed, and its points decline after 30, so do not wait if you already qualify.
Run scenarios in the CRS calculator and change one factor at a time. Focus on the single change with the largest return before spending on another credential or test.
